A top-notch CNC machine shop has numerous tools at its disposal such as CNC mills, lathes, welders, grinders and wire EDM. Wire EDM is an unconventional machining process and not many CNC machine shops have these tools. But what is a CNC wire EDM, and how does it work? In this blog, RWD Tool & Machine Ltd., a machine shop offering custom CNC machining services in Vaughan, explores these questions in detail.
Wire EDM or wire electrical discharge machining is a subtractive CNC machining process wherein an electrically charged wire is used to cut into a metal workpiece. The part created through this process is precise and doesn’t require additional machining and finishing in most cases. The only caveat is that the metal workpiece must be responsive to the electric discharge emanating from the wire.
The two main parts of the process are the workpiece and the wire carrying the electrical charge. The workpiece to be processed is placed in a dielectric fluid and is held in place with a vise or some other mechanism. Then the electric wire runs through the workpiece submerged in this dielectric medium to complete the circuit and cut the metal into the desired shape.
Basically, the wire comprises one end of the electric charge and the metal workpiece on the other side. When the two come in contact, the circuit is complete and the heat generated from it directly melts or vaporizes sections of the metal workpiece. Lastly, the loose pieces of metal left behind by the wire are then removed using deionized water, leaving behind the freshly machined workpiece.
